Simple tool to align the team you lead

How to easily align your team

I am going to ask you one question:

What would happen TO the team you lead – IF ALL of your direct reports had a crystal clear answer to ALL of these questions?

Membership:

  • Who’s in this group?
  • Why was I chosen?
  • Why were they chosen?
  • Do I have values and beliefs that are the same as the others or different?
  • Will the others accept me if they really know me?
  • Will I want to be in the group if I really know them?

    Control:

  • Who’s in charge here?
  • Do I have any influence?
  • What are the group norms?
  • Do I have a chance to add value and make a difference?
  • What is the scope of our group’s power:
  • – Authority to make decisions?
  • – Authority to make recommendations, but management makes final decisions?

    Goals:

  • What is our vision of the outcome of our being together?
  • What are we trying to accomplish by working together?
  • Do I believe in what we are doing?
  • Are the goals clear?
  • Are the goals worthwhile?

    I repeat my question:

What would happen TO the team you lead – IF ALL of your direct reports had a crystal clear answer to ALL of these questions?

I am going to guess some of your possible answers …

Your team would very likely experience an increase in the following:

    - Goal clarity
    - Role clearness
    - Trust
    - Communication transparency
    - Motivation
    - Execution capacity
    - Etc.

In one word – IF ALL of your direct reports had a crystal clear answer to ALL of these questions – the ALIGNMENT of your team would most likely increase; and for some of you reading these lines, it would probably increase dramatically.

These questions are from the “MCG Model” [Membership, Control, Goals] by Jack R. Gibb, “T-Group Theory and Laboratory Method.” Wiley. New York, NY. 1964.

This model is a “classic” among team building models and has been used for a variety of applications – including large-scale change acceleration (see for example: Dannemiller Tyson Associates, “Whole-Scale Change.” Berret-Koehler Publishers. San Francisco, CA. 2000).

Anyway – if you can dramatically increase the alignment of the team you lead just by making sure all of your direct reports have a crystal clear answer to these questions – why don’t you facilitate a meeting where you make sure that happens?

How long will it take you to hold this meeting – 60 minutes tops?

This will be one of the best time investments you can make – and you will reap the benefits for months – if not years – to come.

    Conclusion:

Take the time to make sure all of your direct reports have a crystal-clear answer to the MCG Model questions here above – and you will increase the alignment of the team you lead in no time at all.
